"University of Florida uses Starcraft to Teach Resource Management. Hell Yeah!" --Jessica Fenoy!
ReplyDeleteLink for reference: http://tiny.cc/nb0d8
This article is expressing satisfaction towards the fact that UF has chosen to begin offering a course called "21st Century Skills with Starcraft", even though it utilizes a now 12 year old online game and is only offered to the university's honors students. Apparently the class is taught by a PhD candidate by the name of Nathaniel Poling, now known as "the most awesome professor ever" according to the writer of the article, Mark Raby. He does his best to teach his students different aspects of resource management and adaptive decision making through the playing of this online game. Starcraft, known by its 11 million-strong fan base to be an extremely strategic game that requires great amounts of critical thinking, is a undertaking that the Raby feels will be a bit too hardcore for even honors university students to master within a school year. But with all of this being said, Poling's class is only worth two course credits and is an online class, so it wouldn’t be right to assume that students are studying with videogames in lecture halls.
As far as my impressions go, I understand that this is enjoyable to read if the person reading the article is a Starcraft fan, or any other online RTS (real-time-strategy) fan. But, I am no such fan as I prefer my videogames off the computer, unfortunately enough. So, my conclusion about this article is that while it’s pleasant to see a medium I enjoy being used at such an esteemed educational institution, but I'm not crazy over the news.
Now for a question, right? My question to the class would be if they could think of any other online games that could be utilized as learning devices.

This article is telling us about a boy, who's from Hawaii and has been stuck to the game called "Lineage II" since 2004. And he is suing the CSoft, the makers of MMORPG Lineage II. And he claims that if he knew he would end up so hopelessly hooked, he never would've started playing and believes NCSoft. He's unable to function independently in usual daily activities such as getting up, getting dressed, bathing or communicating with family and friends.
I understood the online games are very attractive, but we need to control ourselves from getting addicted to them. My conlusion abount this article is that we should take care of ourselves from not getting into the case like the boy in the story. We can play online game, but not that much.
Now is the question regarding to this story: How should we control ourselves while we are playing online games.
1. Nicholas Ulrich, Treyarch Talks Black Ops Campaigns, http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/06/04/Treyarch-talks-black-ops-campaign.aspx
ReplyDelete2. The author questions whether the game will have some of the similar features that past Call of Duty games have had. The author also talks about how the multiplayer in CoD: Black Ops will be different but still addicting and will give you an adrenaline rush as past games have done. Additionally, the author received more details about the co-op and campaign from Treyarch.
3. Four facts are Meagan VanBurkleo unveiled more information about the new co-op and campaign mode such as the two being separate unlike other CoD games. It’s stated that the single player mode will be epic, and cinematic. The multiplayer will be used to chisel and hone your skills online and be able to experience the addictiveness of the series. Co-op will be used to have a good time on the couch with your friends.
4. I conclude the game will be amazing and many people around the world will purchase it to experience the amazing adventure that lies within it.
5. The co-op mode will be separate from the campaign mode. Also, multiplayer will be just as fun for those who don’t fully enjoy campaign or co-op. There may be features the old Call of Duty games possessed in this new thrilling online game.
6. I understood this story talks about some of the new content being released in this game and what people can expect from its variety of game play. It’s understood Call of Duty: Black Ops may bring back modes like Nazi Zombies, etc.
7. My opinion is that this looks and sounds like an amazing game and I will definitely buy it when it is released. There’s a lot to look forward to in this game such as the multiplayer and solo mode.

ReplyDelete2.In 12 years, online gambling has made over 20 billion dollars. This is a problem for a country who's struggling with economic problems. The Canadian province will soon start doing it also which makes some eager gamblers ready to play.
3.
- It is not good for the US since it is suffering a recession and there's people that spend their money easily on this games.
-Does not make economic sense, and it will cause serious problems.
-Private online gambling went from corrupting to well-organized and regulated.
-While there at least 2,000 poker sites worldwide, just two major operators, Poker Stars and Full Tilt Poker, own more than 60 percent of the market share.
4.If this grows, it'll become an issue that will not only affect the economy but others that are not involved as well.
5. These games lure gamblers by offering amazing prices that go up to $300,000 in value or more. Which tempts them to play and bet on more.
6. This story made me understand that online gaming is not only about playing but it also "captures" the mind of others by causing them to spend their money and risking it.
7. My opinion is that if they want to keep this going is fine as long as they don't intend to harm those that are not involved even though that whoever plays is maybe an addict or a person who's just having fun.Although we already have it in the real world, having it online may help lose profit to those in the real world. It will make a virtual game become so real that there won't be a need to go to the actual places.
8. Do you agree whether is ok to have these online gambling games,or would you rather like to shut it down so it won't affect others?

ReplyDeleteMicrosoft Xbox 360 250GB,
http://www.techtree.com/India/Reviews/Microsoft_Xbox_360_250GB/551-112765-621.html
The new 250 GB Xbox 360 even though it is really good for online gaming the PS3 has can do more for about the same price. One big factor the author doesnt like about the new 360 is that it doesnt bring HDMI cables and takes more power and it louder then the PS3. Also the PS3 has a cheaper version that has 120GB unlike the new Xbox 360.
new 360 also lacks basic amenities like an HDMI cable in the bundle, there is that big power brick that should have been internal.,There is also a cheaper 120GB version of the PlayStation 3 available which costs about two grands less than the new 360,PlayStation 3, which includes stuff like Blu-ray playback, web browser and till a while back the ability to install Linux on it.
I think the Xbox 360 might consider adding some features that the PS3 has and maybe get some ideas from them for the console.
I understood that the Xbox is superior for online gaming but features on the PS3 is worth more than the Xbox 360.
I agree with this Article Xbox needs to get Blue-ray and a browser installed with HDMI cables.
What is better Xbox 360 or PS3?
1. Alex Travers,"When Games Stop being fun",http://news.cnet.com/2100-1040-881673.html
ReplyDelete2.In this article the author's point of view here is to be careful. Not to end up being irresponsible and getting involved into an addictive game. Leting reality be undermined by unreality.
3.-Online PC games such "EverQuest," the new "Dark Age of Camelot," or "Diablo II"--dubbed "heroinware" by some players--can pose much more complex problems.
-Acknowledging your addiction and problem.
-Excessive game playing reflects problems in the home environment.
-"It's a huge and growing problem with older teenage males and young adult males,"
4.Some people will read the article and realize what aspects of life are more important. Others will just go right along playing Everquest or any other online game as nothing is wrong.
5.Dennis Bennet was failing his college courses, his marriage was heading straight down to the gutter, and he hardly payed any attention to his child. This is a serious addiction to an online game which is an unacceptable one at that. So he fixed this and quit the game and his family and grades have recovered.
6.That if you are going to play an online game do not end up addicted to it. Play leisurely and enjoy yourself. But remember whats real and make believe.
7.It is right on the target. When it talks about people becoming seriously addicted. It does happen and does ruin lives. Which is sad, but people need to have self-control.
8.Should something be done to these online gaming companies. Or does fault lay in the hands of the actual players?
Why they should be a beta in such a huge gamehttp://callofduty.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=269231
ReplyDeleteJhonatan suarez
This article talks about why such a huge game like call of duty black ops should have a beta even though a beta would slower the production of the game.People would prefer to wait a little bit more and get a great game and a great online experience. One example of why their should be a beta in a huge game is mw2. Ifnity award spend alot of money in this game but they never release a beta and do to that they have a great amount of problems with the game.Another positive example blizz creators of starcraft 2 a huge massive game it took them 11 years to make the sequel of this but before they release it they release a beta that when for about two months and now that the game has release they have a perfect online experience. Many video game producers have spent huge amounts of cash in developing the game but they never release the beta and have fail to create a great game. What i think would happen next is that the creators of call of duty black ops would release a beta to create a great game.
What i understand from the article is that sometimes a huge game or any game it should have a beta.
My question is what are positives and negatives side of releasing a beta for game.

ReplyDeleteCreepy 42 year old woman meets 16 year old on World of Warcraft!
http://www.yelp.com/topic/chicago-creepy-42-year-old-woman-meets-16-year-old-off-of-world-of-warcraft
A 42 year old mother of four was secretly chatting with a 16 year old teenager through the World of Warcraft service about meeting up. 16 year old, Andrew Kane told his parents about meeting up with the woman in a local hotel. His parents didn't give him permission to meet with her. In the end Andrew Kane ran way and met with the woman. The authorities were notified and they later found the couple in a furniture store. The age consent in Canada is 16 and Andrew said he was 20, so the woman will not be charged with any crime. This problem will never be resolved in its entirety, people are always communicating on a daily basis and sometimes the age difference is large. This is a problem that parents must be aware of and they have to talk to their children about the dangers of online communication.
This was not the first time the woman has had encounters with younger children. She has formed relationships with other children but has never gone this far. What I have understood from this story is that teenagers should be very careful with the people they speak to over the Internet. My opinion on this issue is that parents need to be more involved in the lives of their children and pay attention to the people they communicate with over the Internet.
What measures can parents take in order to avoid these dangerous online situations?
1.Alex Travers, Merchants React to Google Instant,
ReplyDeletehttp://www.practicalecommerce.com/articles/2266-Merchants-React-to-Google-Instant
2.Merchants are being questioned on how the newly updated google instant is affecting their small business. Due to the update it makes searching up an item much faster and adds optional choices. Allowing store items to be advertised if their name is similar, so that the consumer would have it in their mind and possibly look on that link. Causing a want for that item and then a consumer will buy, the business will make money. Business have said it has increased their traffic by 20% since the update.
3.
A. "In comparing Google organic referrals to our top two websites during a similar timeframe before and after September 8, we see a 20 percent increase in traffic to our main website and a 16 percent increase to our second largest site.”
B. "I certainly believe that Google Instant will direct searches to the suggested keywords Google favors. In the long run, that will have a significant impact on long tail keywords and benefit companies that rank highly in broad terms and brand names.”
C. Ultimately, that will lead to higher advertising costs for us and more revenue for Google.
D. Google Instant may also impact pay-per-click advertisers that are not in the top three listings, as people will be less inclined to scroll down the page where the other PPC ads are located.
4.My prediction is that with the new update of google, this will increase traffic for other businesses and allow google to possibly make extra money by increasing their advertising fee.
5.Google instant came out on September 8,2010. Businesses alone have said their traffic has gone up by 20% due to google instant. While it increases search results through a wide variety of consumers.
6.I understand how Google is updating their software for progress between both small businesses and consumers. It allows a wider variety of advertisements and keeping traffic flow going to other businesses.
7.That Google instant will most likely be a very beneficial update to businesses and consumers in the long run.
8.Has the updated version of Google affected your interest in search results or items you plan to buy?

4 facts
-Measuring page performance
-To Reduce fewer http requests reducing load time.
-Optimizing Images also can reduce loading time
-Using a content delivering Network reduces load time.
With these facts I predict that this could be beneficial to ecommerce customers by reducing the loading time per site.Ecommerce customers would perfer a faster website for their companies. They need these facts to improve the website they bought .With slow loading time the ecommerce customers are turned off.I understand that loading time per website that they look at for buying is vital to their decision of purchasing it.
Question: What other key factors make ecommerce flourish?

ReplyDeleteauthors poitn fo view- The author is talking about how mobile phones are now a big way to shop online. Sears is one of the many stores that has application to shop, view the shoping catalogs, look at weekly coupons, etc. More and more stores are creating apps for these mobile phone usally for big smart phone. This is a big way that e commerce is being targeted.
Facts- Sears launched a mobile application that allows wireless users to search its products, browse by category, review current coupons, etc.2. During the 2009 Christmas holiday season, Best Buy also ran a first-of-its-kind location-based augmented reality promotion to help drive traffic to their retail locations as consumers were out buying gifts.3. Most of today's consumers use the Internet to plan the limited time they have for real, physical store shopping.4. Whether or not they believe their products will ever sell over a phone, retailers can take advantage of location-based services and GPS-enabled phones to entice on the go consumers into stores.
Future prediction-I think mobile e commerce will becoming the best way to shop online with good smartphones, people don’t have time to go to the store and not find their product they are looking for with apps like these people will rely on it more.
What did you understand from this story? I understand that mobile commerce is a big way to shop.

Is online buying . To many people it is helpful and to others it is disastrous . Well this lady candy Blakeslee and she wanted to buy her dog some toys . She also sold antique things on eBay before so she thought it would be a good place to buy them from . She shopped around and she says it was the worst experience ever after she ordered it took them 3 ½ weeks just to ship it . She called to check on it and the people were so rude . She realized that the seller had bought them form a wholesalers and could sell them online and make money . She decided that’s what she wants to do so she started buying them . now today she make s$350,000 of annual gross revenue wow that’s more then what people that actually work. Also they stock around 1,300 inventory units, and they ship around 8,600 orders per year. She made her own website just to sell them. My opinion is that don’t trust all online buying because you might get scammed . On the other hand you can get a lot of business and money but depends on how you sell your product or service.

This article is about the tips to help the beginners in ecommerce. The article provided 6 useful tips, which includes letting the customers see the product portfolio, efficiently manage your resellers, delivering the items on time, knowing when the visitors come to your site, helping the customers after they purchased the items from your site, and the most important tip, is to get the customer loyalty.
The owner of the brand should have his customer see the portfolio of the product, which is good to let the customer know what it is; the owner’s supposed to manage the reseller, get the ideas of how they are doing; the owner need to deliver the items on time in order to satisfy the customers; the owner should have their customer loyalty, so the customers would shop with the same brand again.
I have learned that there’re lots of strategies in ecommerce. Ecommerce has brought us a lot of convenience.
Here’s the question: Will in the future all the businesses are done through the ecommerce instead of in the mall or in the market?

ReplyDelete2. Twitter is revamping its Web page so that users will actually stay on the site. With its reliance on 140-character messages that typically link to other content, Twitter's model was tailor made to send users elsewhere.
3. Design changes.
Keep users in the site longer.
Draw more advertisers.
Include a two-pane format.
4. Depending on how twitter chooses to redesign their webpage, it’s the users that are going to be the judge of that.
5. Twitter is trying to attract more users to enter the website but staying longer in it.
6. I understood that Twitter is trying to become a popular website more than it already is; by getting more users.
7. I think is a good idea that Twitter is trying to improve although it would become a competition to those other websites.
8. Do you think that Twitter would gain as much popularity as those other social network websites?
Jessica Fenoy “Craigslist faces new wave of political attacks”
ReplyDeletehttp://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-20015916-38.html
As more scandals continue to surround Craig Newmark and his website, craigslist.com, more political opponents have entered the fray, including President Obama. The author finds it odd that Craigslist has found itself to be as much as a victim as major corperations, such as BP, even though they only employ around 30 people and haven’t changed much of their content (other than the ousting of an “adult services” section). The reason why craigslist has come under such fire is because politicians tend to continuously bring up acertain summer news story having to do with a now-deceased medical student that was dubbed the “Craigslist Killer”. The company’s owner, Newmark, has also contributed to all the anti-Craigslist protest by providing awkward answers to questions asked in interviews, especially in reference to the scandal concerning Craigslist profiting from unappropriate ads from underaged girls. Most politicans believe today that the website will continue to receive negative press unless they clean up their act and overhaul their system.
I understand the reasons behind all of the Craigslist.com hate, I really do. I find it disturbing that the website has manage to host so many unappropriate and illegal services, not to mention serving as a tool for a serial killer. My opinion is very similar to that of the politicians cited in the article, I think that Craigslist really needs to figure out some viable solutions fast before they continue to add to their negative image. A question for the class would be whether or not Craigslist should be given another chance to clean up before they get in serious trouble with the authorities.

Paul DeGregorio, chief of elections for the electronic voting firm Everyone Counts, says Internet systems currently in use in many locations including in Europe and Asia have withstood security challenges. DeGregorio said electronic voting "empowers" voters including people with disabilities who cannot get to polling places, troops abroad and others living outside their home countries, including some six million Americans. Pamela Smith, president of Verified Voting, said vulnerability questions remain, whether the systems accept votes directly online or by email or fax.

This is about that Computer scientists and researchers are extremely concerned over the accuracy and security of electronic voting machines but voters are more concerned over usability, says University of Maryland professor Paul Harrison who is the director of the Center for American Politics and Citizenship. In his new book Voting Technology which is the not so Simple Act of Casting a Ballot Herndon says that field tests of different types of equipment and ballots found that usability was a more pressing concern to voters than security.
Facts
The voting machines aren’t 100 percent accurate.
Most of the articles about voting technology are at Computing Machinery.
Paul Harrison is a professor at the University of Maryland.
Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science and has been certifying voting systems for 27 years.

A group of students at University of Michigan tested the system to see how vulnerable it was. There were hackers of the system and was found out that these hackers were from Iran and China. Confidence for the elections has been dropping at a steady pace since the 2000 elections.

An 18 year old named Desmond tried to steal the idenity of a man in California. While using another man's idenity he tried to pull out a loan for a 2006 Ford mustang. Due to his age the dealer did a little research to find the true person. Reached him and figured it was not Desmond, so the police set up a sting operation and arrested Desmond, his mother, and an accomplice.
1. Desmond tried to steal the idenity of a man in California.
2. Stealing someone else's idenity can be fairly easy. Easy enough that a teenager can do so.
3.But sooner or later it will be stopped. Seeing that the police can get you and charge you.
4. Idenity theft is a felon.
Desmond and his accomplices will have to serve jail time for attempting to steal another man's idenity.
The three under arrest are ages 18, 19, and 33
Its a son, mother, friend.
That no matter what, sooner or later stealing someone's idenity will not be able to getaway clean. You will get caught.
That stealing someone's idenity is morally wrong and you will end up getting caught.
Would you ever steal someone's idenity?
